About Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a family business born and bred in Cornwall, now run by David and Tracy Goad (and their sons Henry and Reggie). Their love and enthusiasm for everything sweet has been guiding their Cornish confectionery since 1964 when the first Buttermilk shop opened in Padstow. Back then all their fudge was made by hand above the shop! They’ve come a long way since then, and today are recognised as Great Taste Producers. Despite recent growth, the expert chefs still use the same traditional methods, stirring quality ingredients over open flames – there just a few more copper pans involved now!

A charming business based a little further down the road than our fudgey neighbours. Gordie and Marilu brought The Devon Beach Company to life in 2015. Perfect Peppermint Popcorn!

For all the missers of Mingles and lovers of the humble After Eight, this is a festive treat you would be simply silly not to have! Put an extra indulgent touch to your Christmas movie time with this easy popcorn treat.

To make at home, you will need the following:

  • 250g of chocolate (we used white, but you can have whatever tickles your fancy)
  • 2 candy canes, plus an extra for dusting
  • Peppermint extract
  • At least 1 packets of Sweet & Salty Portlebay Popcorn, 75g

IMG_6831

Method:

  1. Bash up the candy canes into chunks, like they’ve just told you  “Gravy has no place in a Christmas dinner”. This is best done in a plastic sandwich bag using a rolling pin to break up the pieces. Make sure you leave enough nice big chunks to decorate the top!
  2. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, checking it at 1 minutes intervals. Shouldn’t take any longer than 2 minutes!
  3. Once it’s lovely and runny, put 2 teaspoons of Peppermint Extract into the melted chocolate (or to taste), and stir in.

4. Empty your Sweet & Salty popcorn into a large mixing bowl, and pour in your peppermint mixture!

Now all you do is give a good stir, and split into bowls, or keep it all to yourself in the mixing bowl, it is Christmas after all!). Use the last of the candy cane chunks to decorate the top! end copy

If you’re not a fan of mint, try melting up some Terry’s Chocolate Orange, or slathering in Nutella for an even more luxurious treat! However you’re enjoying this festive season, make sure you’re eating only the very best!

Meet Portlebay’s Naughty but Nice Neighbours!

Just down the road from our little poppery lives The Devon Fudge Company! Our lovely neighbours are another company that are apart of our Christmas Advent Competition (Day 8 to be exact!) and we just LOVE anything and everything fudge!

The Devon Fudge Company is a family run business, who make deliciously smooth and creamy fudge. Their secret traditional recipe dates all the way back to 1930! Today the chief fudge maker is Peter, who has followed in his father’s footsteps into the fantastical world of fudge.

peterr

Chief fudge maker Peter

Peter started working full time for his father and his business partner, in the early 1980’s. Following the sad death of his father and father’s fudge partner, Peter moved away from the world of fudge and started a different occupation.

Later, after realising that the West Country was lacking a quality creamy fudge cooked in the traditional methods, Peter set about the process of developing the never forgotten wonderful recipe his father taught him, and created The Devon Fudge Company.

Peter’s fudge is handmade in a copper kettle, with each batch taking an hour to cook, and lovingly stirred continuously with an extremely large wooden spoon! The temperature and cooling process is essential to the scrumptious creamy product, and all the fudges are cut and packed by hand and love!

The Devon Fudge Company only use natural ingredients, local butter and of course local clotted cream! All of their fabulous fudge is also free from palm oil, artificial additives and preservatives and gluten! This is our kind of fudge!

Don’t forget to enter our Christmas Advent Competition to be in with a chance of winning The Devon Fudge Company’s fudge and a box of Portlebay Popcorn! Just pop over to our social media (Instagram, Facebook or Twitter) and follow the directions! (This competition launches at 5pm tonight)

Meet the Meco Tote

It’s Day 5 of our advent competition and today we are introducing Catherine and Emma, two Berkshire based mums, and the masterminds behind Meco! These two lovely ladies together created the perfect handbag, which is not only super practical but also very gorgeous too! This fabulous creation is called a Meco tote.

The gorgeous Catherine and Emma

The Meco tote is a new concept in handbag simplicity. Made from silicone, each one of the six sumptuous colours looks fabulous carried by the hand or over the shoulder, and contrasts perfectly with the understated handles. It also has a hidden magnetic clasp which is an essential security feature. The tote measures 36 centimetres high x 30 centimetres wide x 11 centimetres deep, (excluding handles), making it the perfect size for every day use!

The Meco Bag

This enchanting tote wears unbelievably well; you can throw mud at it, pour coffee on it or even colour it in with felt tips and it will wipe clean with a little soap and water! It doesn’t scratch, fade or stretch and is harder wearing than leather. What a dream come true!

bags-8404-final

The Sea tote

Oh wait, there’s even more glorious news! The bag is 100% vegan and cruelty free,  and the silicone used to create the tote is a natural, sand based material which is recyclable. The PU handles are also less harmful to the environment and more durable than PVC – AMAZING!

We are in love. To be in with a chance of winning a Meco tote, pop over to one of our social media pages (Instagram, Facebook or Twitter) and follow the competition directions! BEST OF LUCK! (This competition launches at 5pm tonight)

Portlebay Advent Competition – Day 1

It’s December 1st, which means that it’s Day 1 of our Christmas Advent Competition! EXCITING! Our first wonderful partner is Atlantic Surf Company. We love that they are from Devon, just like us, and we love all their clothing too! Untitled

Atlantic Surf Company makes cool, funky, eco conscious clothing in deepest Devon. They hand screen print their surf inspired clothing and have created a fresh new look and style which we just can’t get enough of!
Atlantic Surf Company have also teamed up with The Wave Project, a charity that changes the lives of young people through the magic of surfing! The Wave Project began in 2010, when the local NHS Trust in Cornwall funded The Wave Project to run a six-week pilot scheme, to examine the benefits of surfing on the emotional health of young people working with professional services. The pilot project used a psychological evaluation to assess whether six weeks of surfing helped the group, who were referred by a range of services such as CAMHS, social services and mental health charities.

Untitled2The results of the pilot showed that going surfing once a week helped people feel more confident, improved their outlook and gave them a sense of fun. Encouraged by the results, The Wave Project was established as a not for profit company. Atlantic Surf Company give 10% of all profits to this charity to keep this amazing project running!

For a chance to win so cool clothing that also does some good in the world, enter our competition on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, launching at 5pm tonight!

Portlebay’s Pimped Christmas Wrapping

Gift giving at Christmas is one of the many delightful parts of the festive period! We love the joy that it brings and all the prep that comes with it! However, a gift wouldn’t be as enchanting without the decorative wrap and accessories! So we have come up with four simple but chic looks for you to pimp your Christmas wrapping (these looks work best wrapped around boxes.)

You will need:

  • Brown wrapping paper (parcel paper)
  • Some pretty/festive twine
  • Some festive accessories to tie onto the parcel (these can be purchased at any shops that sell crafty things!)
  • Cello tape
  • Scissors
IMG_5854

You will need

Step 1: Measure up and cut accordingly the amount of brown paper that is required to cover your present. Carefully wrap the gift, but do be attentive as brown paper does crease easily and so any folds that you may need to re-do could leave crinkles.

Step 2: Take the twine and tie it around the gift (not to tightly else the paper will crinkle). Once you have brought the twine back to the front side, tie it into a simple knot making sure that you still have quite a lot twine left for fastening your accessory.

Step 3: Place your festive accessory on top of the twine knot and then carefully tie a tight knot to keep the decoration secure. To finish off the look tie a bow on top of the knot and trim any extra twine. TA- DAH!

We would love to see how you’ve pimped your Christmas wrapping, do send us some snaps!
