Our Bespoke Packets are in a League of their Own!

Our small Portlebay Team are beaming from ear to ear, as we are delighted to announce our new service of bespoke popcorn packaging! We are even more pleased with the result of our debut for Warner Bros. The wondrous popcorn packets are supporting the preview screenings of Justice League, and the packets look very cool (if we do say so ourselves!).

The packets feature the main characters from the film, including Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

Jonty White, our Chief Pop-Miester, commented on the groovy popcorn packets saying:  “As a premium manufacturer, we are constantly innovating and offering consumers new, exciting flavours and textures and this diversification into personalised packaging is another facet of our capabilities.

“For Warner Bros., we personalised packs of our extremely popular Sweet & Salty flavour with the movie’s characters.  This was a short production run, solely for the film’s three UK preview screenings, in advance of its main release to the public in mid-November.

“Popcorn is more popular than ever and Portlebay Popcorn is one of the few artisan popcorn brands that manufactures its own premium product, with sweet, salty, spicy, smoky and even fizzy options.  As such, we have the in-house capabilities to create branded, bespoke packaging and this is an area of our business which we are aiming to grow.

Popcorn in The News

Recently popcorn has seen great criticism in the news, as the number of popcorn-related dental issues have doubled over the past three years, according to The Telegraph, and many other broadsheets and tabloids. Supposedly, popcorn has surpassed other more known dental offenders such as hard boiled sweets and toffee, as a result of the rise in popcorn consumption. Our team here at Portlebay Popcorn were surprised when this story hit the news, as we are very proud to say we have NEVER received a legitimate complaint that our popcorn has caused any dental issues!

How have we lessen the number of kernels in our popcorn packets?

In the Poppery, our popcorn experiences many different stages on it’s journey, before it even reaches the packet you see on the shelf. There are two machines that each piece of popcorn will encounter on it’s travels, that reduce the number of kernels in each popcorn batch: the sifter, and a unique Portlebay system that filters our popcorn through weight measurements.

Once the popcorn kernels have been popped in our kettles (not your average kettle that you use to make a cup of tea!) the batch is then taken away on a conveyor belt to the sifter. The sifter filters out all the up-popped kernels (traditionally called Old Maids!), like a giant rotating sieve! After the sifter, the popcorn is then tossed through a seasoning drum to add the flavour. The last step to remove the kernels is a very clever system which is unique to Portlebay. This system measures the weight of each item and will remove anything that is heavier than a popped kernel – an un-popped kernel or sugar lump! Through this process we have been able to limit the number of kernels to that are in our bags industry leading levels, and lessen the likelihood of any dental issues!

Our team at Portlebay are very proud that we have never received a legitimate dental complaint and we will continue to work as hard as we can to keep our popcorn yummy, natural and dental damage free!

How to Beat Those Winter Blues

Although winter is the fun and festive period of Christmas (EEK), yummy food, cosy nights and delicious hot chocolates, winter can make us all a bit down and miss those wild summer adventures! So, we have some handy tips to keep you (and us!) as chirpy and cheerful as possible!

Keep active

Although it’s super tempting to snuggle up and indulge in those tasty treats, getting out and about, and running around (walking works too!) has proven to raise spirits and keep us happy, happy, happy! Not only does staying active reduce stress, anxiety and depression, it also helps us with weight loss too- woo!

Here are a few fun ideas to get you moving:

  • Get walking and enjoy the crisp winter season
  • Convince your friends to get involved and do some fitness classes together- get competitive
  • Jump into the swing of Christmas and take to the skating rink- Ice Ice Baby
  • Remember that everything counts- run up those stairs, walk to the shops, have dance and a jiggle while the kettle is boiling
  • Get your family involved and go on a mini adventure- Castles, beaches, National Parks

Taking up a new hobby can be a great way to keep you busy! If you choose something creative you could even busy yourself with making your friends and family Christmas goodies- cards, decorations, cookies, wreaths, there’s so much to make!

If you aren’t the creative type perhaps look to get involved with a sport. Team sports are great and there lots of sports that aren’t only for the summer periods!

Before the times of flicking a switch to heat up our homes and the wonderful technology we have today, keeping warm was far more difficult. As we have evolved and can keep cosy all through the chilly season, we must not forget that it is super important to maintain a healthy balanced diet. Along with our wonderful Christmas treats, we also need our good old greens! A healthy diet will help prevent that winter gloominess taking over!

Easy Painted Pumpkin Ideas

It’s that time of year again where our screens are filled with gruesome ghouls, haunted houses and even the streets have a vampire or two on the prowl. With all this horror and gore coming at us from every angle, do we really need to bring it into our kitchens too? Carved pumpkins sure look impressive on Pinterest, but the amount of scraping, scooping and swearing at the shoddy carving kits you buy from the supermarket, it’s enough to put anyone on edge, even without the jump scares.

Painted pumpkins are another story altogether. With little mess, no knives and a whole world of colours at your fingertips, the possibilities are endless, and leave you with pumpkins that will jazz up any windowsill or Hallows Eve spread!

Dripping Pumpkin

You will need:

  • A pumpkin
  • 1 tube of matte acrylic paint
  • 1 tube of metallic acrylic paint
  • 1 large paintbrush
  • 1 medium paintbrush
  • 1 small paintbrush

Halloween doesn’t have to be all blood and guts – give your pumpkins oodles of opulence with metallic acrylics and matte finishes. Not as scary as your typical jack o’ lantern, but this will definitely add a little extra gothic glamour to any ghoulish gathering! Use the large paintbrush to cover your pumpkin in the base colour, allow to dry either naturally or with a hairdryer, and apply another coat if necessary. Using the medium paintbrush, create the lines going down the pumpkin starting at the stalk at the top, making sure to go all the way around, and varying in length. Then using the smaller paintbrush, create the paint globs at the end of the lines for a realistic oozing effect!

You will need:

  • A pumpkin
  • Acrylic paint in at least 3-4 different colours and varying finishes
  • Washi or masking tape
  • 3-4 medium paint brushes, or just 1 if you’re happy to clean between colour switches

This style is perfect for those who LIVE for the satisfaction of slowly peeling off pieces of tape to reveal a glorious design of your own creation. We chose a geometric pattern commonly found in Ikea, but you can create whatever style you like! Simply use washi or masking tape to create your design, fill in the gaps using acrylic paint and a medium paint brush, and make sure to layer up so the colours POP! It usually takes between 30-45 minutes for the layer to dry, or around 4-5 with a hair dryer, so make sure the layers aren’t too thick. It may be difficult but be restrained when pulling off the tape, and peel off slowly; acrylic paint tends to lift and tear away if ripped away too quickly!

Stencilled Pumpkin

You will need:

  • A pumpkin
  • White card
  • A pencil or pen
  • A pair of scissors or craft scalpel
  • Some sewing or drawing pins
  • 2 tubes of acrylic paint
  • 1 large paintbrush
  • 1 medium paintbrush

This requires a little extra effort, but the results are terror-ific! Apply your base colour first, using 1 or 2 layers if you need to, and while it dries create your stencil using the card and scissors or scalpel, making sure to consider the size of the pumpkin before you draw out your design. We found it best to then use sewing pins to stick the stencil on to the pumpkin before filling it in with your contrasting paint, as tape or blue tack would peel away your base layer! Maybe you’re gifted in calligraphy and you don’t need stencils to tie your creativity down, but for us mere mortals stencils are a necessity for creating a truly polished looking pumpkin!

You will need:

  • 1 plumpkin
  • Acrylic paint in at least 3-4 different colours and varying finishes
  • 3-4 small paint brushes, or just 1 if you’re happy to clean between colour switches

 With these adorable balls of spookiness, you can really do whatever design you would like and they will always come out great because…well…look at it! You won’t find these gems in with the carving pumpkins; instead you’ll be more likely to find them in with the cooking pumpkins in the vegetable section. If you can’t find any of these, look out for little squashes in the vegetable section too, as they will work just as well!

 

Banana Oat Pancakes

Bored of your regular smashed avocado on toast? Fancy kicking your pancake game up a notch? Using no flour and no sugar, these banana oat pancakes are a barely naughty alternative to your regular Sunday brunch!

For 1 person you will need:

• 1 banana

• 1 egg

• 65g of rolled oats

• ½ a teaspoon of baking powder

• A pinch of salt

• A pinch of cinnamon (depending on your cinnamon taste levels)

• Whatever you would like to serve! We used maple syrup, fresh raspberries and cherries, and a sprinkling of Cinnamon Swirl Popcorn.

Method:

• Use either a blender or tonnes of elbow grease to mush up the banana and egg, and then use your remaining strength to mix in the oats, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.

• It can be as smooth as you like it – we used a blender so it was silky smooth, but I’m sure it would be just as nice with a few chunks of banana inside!

• Let the batter have a little time out for 10-20 minutes so it can thicken.

• Heat a frying pan over a medium heat, and plop in a blob of coconut oil (or any oil you prefer).

• Fry generous spoonful’s of batter on both sides until golden brown, and good enough to wolf down in one bite.

• Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup and lashing of popcorn and fruit!

Portlebay Glitter Gals

This summer, we’re wanting to give away as many bundles of love and joy as one popcorn company possibly can. Why? Why not! Everyone needs a pick-me-up every now and then, and sometimes a little package of popcorn can do just that.

But for when popcorn doesn’t cut the mustard, we like to team up with companies who love sprinkling a little happiness as much as we do. Enter: Wish Upon a Sparkle.

This lovely lot have given us not only enough glittery goodness to send out to a lucky winner of our Summer of Love competition, but lots of pots of fairy dust so we can show you all how to make yourself into a bona fide Tinkerbell.

We’ve created three signature looks for you to recreate yourself for your next big gig, or just for the hell of it at home! Inspired by three of our popcorn flavours, Sea Salted, Wasabi & Ginger and Very Berry, it could not be easier (or messier) to recreate yourselves.

 

All you really need for these looks is a good, trusty pot of Vaseline, some sort of make-up or paint brush you don’t mind using, some glitter and idea of where you want to put it. It will come off (relatively) easily, but there is a reason people loved Glitter Bombs so much – it gets absolutely everywhere and you better have a decent hoover, as adorable Henry doesn’t always cut it!

Sweet & Salty Goddess

Lovely Faye, usually in Accounts, got hurtled into the world of being a mesmerising glitter creature, through the magic of Vaseline and glitter nonetheless! We created this asymmetric look by pulling Faye’s locks to one side and then pinning into place, leaving us a lovely canvas to spread some magic on the one side. Definitely the most dramatic look of the three!

Very Berry Fairy 

Millie? Who’s Millie? This is our new office sugar plum fairy, who used to be our Marketing Intern. Long hair is best for this look, and Millie’s is so long we curl it from one side of her head round to her shoulder, and then smother it in glitter of course! Incredibly easily, and put as much in your hair as you like, but be faced with a very messy shower later.

Wasabi & Ginger Mermaid 

Lucy has graciously stepped down from her life as Marketing Manager to become a part-time mermaid, but without the gills to her relief. We chose this flavour look, yes for the comic relief, but also green does go with red heads really rather well. Short hair looks are a little tricker, but if you or a pal is good with plaits they can work really well.

Marshmallow Popcorn Balls

Makes | 8-10 popcorn balls (depending on if you’d like them bite-sized, or if “gob-smacker” is more your style) 

Prep | 10 minutes 

Cooking time | 10 minutes

Ready in | 30 minutes 

Over Easter we showed you some of our beautifully sculpted and oh so easy to make popcorn balls! They could not be simpler to recreate, and you can let your imagination run wild with any littles extras you’d like to top them with.

Ingredients

  • 75g of butter
  • 75g bag of Portlebay Popcorn
  • 120g of mini marshmallows (plus extra for nibbling)
  • Food colouring of your choice, and any extras you desire

Method

  1. Melt the butter gently in a large saucepan under a medium heat, and then add the mini marshmallows.
  2. Keep stirring marshmallows as they mix with the butter, until they’ve fully mixed together. If you think the mixture is still too oily, add a few more marshmallows to the mix (provided you haven’t gobbled them up already).
  3. Take the mixture off the heat, and pour into a mixing bowl. Now’s the time to get creative! Add your favourite food colouring, dried fruit, chopped buts, rainbow drops, whatever! The world is your oyster…but not seafood, pretty sure that would be horrible.
  4. Once that is mixed together, bundle in your popcorn and make sure to coat every last kernel with your glorious concoction. The mixture should be slightly hardening by now, so this is an excellent time to start working on your Michelle Obama arms.
  5. Once it is fully coated, use some of the butter to rub on your hands, and start moulding into balls.
  6. Place on to greaseproof paper, and chill in the fridge for 30 mins. Once they are keeping their shape, they are ready to enjoy!

 

 

 

Get Healthy the Fun Way!

By this time in January, you’re either powering through your New Years resolutions like a determined stallion, your fridge is full of courgetti spaghetti, or you’ve decided you’re actually pretty awesome, so no need for #NewYearNewMe. To be frank, you can be healthier at any point in the year, but it does make things easier when yoga mats and gym memberships are on sale.

For those who’d like a little fitness inspiration, we’ve been trying out a mix of healthy snacks and quirky exercise classes to see the lighter side of being a healthy bean in 2017! Exercise never has to be a seasonable thing, so expect our active investigations throughout the year 😊

 

The first activity this year to tick off our list: Trampoline Aerobics at Super Tramp Parks! 

Apart from the most obvious benefit of bouncing up and down like a giddy toddler (or maybe that’s just me?), trampolining is also an extremely low impact sport for your joints, especially when compared to jogging or tennis! Repeated classes can also lead to stronger bones, a faster metabolism, and a pretty good bum if your fitness instructors make you do enough lunges.

I unfortunately didn’t finish the class, as I was busy Snap Chatting and Instagramming a lot of it…and that was the biggest mistake of my week.

If you work through all the exercises, the bouncing from one trampoline to the other and the 50 or so sit-ups, you’ll end the class with a nice relaxing series of yoga style moves to gently work through, demonstrated here:

Without this essential part of the work out, you will be guaranteed to be aching for DAYS. Literally DAYS. For complete transparency, we attended this class on Monday evening, it is now Friday, and only today have I felt comfortable enough to crouch down and stand up again without the aid of a chair or nearest person to grab on to. The cool down part of any exercise class or activity should never really be missed, but with classes that don’t feel too intense on the surface, it’s probably even more import to do them. Lesson = Learnt.

This is not your standard trampoline jaunt; this will leave you feeling like you just bounced up a mountain, and lunged all the way down again, but you feel all the better for it. If you’re looking to brush away those Christmas cobwebs, or you want an exercise class that feels more like fun than work, or you just want to see what Buster the Boxer was so excited about, this is definitely the class for you.

In the Spotlight: Our Popperations Manager

Meet the captain of our poppery ship: lovely Ian. He’s been our Popperations Manager for the past three and half years, and he’s the chap responsible for all the whizzes, bangs and pops that go on in the factory.

As we’re lucky enough to make all of our popcorn ourselves, we can actually have a sit down and hear all about the guy that makes our little packets of sunshine a reality.

Why did you want to work for Portlebay?

“Well, I was headhunted by Jonty and Neil when they first started, and haven’t been allowed out since.”

What is you favourite thing about working here?

“The popcorn, and the people…but mostly the popcorn”…ouch

What is your favourite flavour?

(Speaking as a part-time vegan) “Crispy Bacon & Maple Syrup” – it’s just that good.

Where is your happy place?

“Start Point Lighthouse; whenever I have friends or family down we go down and you can see the whole bay from there. It’s also the place that reminds me of home, so when I’ve been away for a little while this is where I like to come back to”

“I want to see the Victoria falls in Zimbabwe – we got very close to visiting when the wife and I were in South Africa, but we didn’t quite get there”

“Well I really do love bacon, but if I had to make a new one, it would be Thai Green Curry”

Who would play you in a movie about yourself?

“Sean Connery”

“My wife says it’s my legs, and she’s never wrong!”

“I think I was 8 or 9, and I got a crew cut. It was only bad because before that it was down to shoulders!”

What is your biggest fear?

“Probably being trapped in small spaces. It all goes back to when I was a kid, and I climbed into the fridge. This was only a little fridge that was on top on the counter; being little I made it fall from the counter and on to the floor with me inside it, straight on to the door. I only got out after rocking the fridge from side to side”

What is your greatest achievement?

“I always said I wanted to be able to see the sea from my house, and now I can. It’s what I miss the most when I’m away from home, but now I’ve always got that view to come back to.”
